This website is a safe and supportive space for you to find out the facts about smoking and vaping during pregnancy and a place to access resources to aid you in stopping if this is what you wish to do

What are the effects of smoking on a developing baby?

There is a wide body of established research that demonstrates the negative health impacts that smoking has on reproductive health and pregnancy. These include but are not limited to: increased risk for miscarriage and pre-term birth, lower birth weight, certain birth defects, tissue damage in the lung and brain, and a higher risk of SIDS

But isn't vaping much less harmful for my baby?

While vaping or E-cigarettes do not contain carbon monoxide and tar; the 2 main harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, there is a lack of research as to if the vapours might negatively impact a developing fetus's health. What is clear, however is that nicotine is harmful to a developing baby's brain which is highly sensitive throughout pregnancy. The healthiest thing you can do is quit before you get pregnant. However, even if you are someway through your pregnancy you will still benefit your baby (and yourself!) from quitting nicotine.

How does nicotine impact on pregnancy?

We have receptors in our brain (think of them as locations) where nicotine binds and this is how nicotine exerts its many effects on our brain and nervous system.

We have acteylcholine receptors (that include nictonic receptors) in our brains that develop as part of early nervous system development. These dividing cells that then go on to become an embryo and fetus. Adding nicotine to this process impacts  negatively on early nervous sytem development and should be completely avoided.

A new way to view stopping vaping

Implementing-and sticking to- new behaviours can be hard! especially when we have come to view those behaviours as pleasurable, stress relieving, etc etc. However, when we have the right mindset permanent change becomes much much more achievable. Pregnancy and motherhood is a time of new and magical beginnings-the perfect time- to give up and let go of old habits that are dragging you down and keeping you stuck in the past.

There are so many ways to support yourself on your journey of quitting vaping. Using the power of your subconscious mind can be a powerful way to influence your decisions and to bolster your willpower and determination and to aid you in the development of a person with the identity of a non-vaper. Remember it is not about what your are losing it is about what your are gaining...FREEDOM, POWER, CONTROL AND AGENCY OVER YOUR LIFE. There is no greater feeling that knowing that we ourselves are in charge of our lives, and our lives are made up of the small daily decisions we make each day that compound over time.

Of course, having a healthy baby is the number one reason to stop vaping but there are so many other benefits that will far outweigh the fake stress relief you get from the ingestion of nicotine.
